Sewer & Drainage Issues
Residents experiencing sewer line problems should call the Village Public Works Department immediately before calling a plumber or contractor. The blockage could be in the Village's sewer line, and the Public Works Department can help determine where the problem is. If the problem is in the private service line to the house, the resident could be advised of further action. Please remember not to put any foreign objects into your drainage system at home, e.g., paper towels, diapers, sanitary products and rags. In addition, do not introduce paint, motor oil, antifreeze or other hazardous chemicals or products into your drainage. These materials can be dangerous and they cause backups in the sanitary sewer system.
Water System Issues
Although the water system is designed to operate without problems, occasionally a situation may arise which requires attention. If you ever see water bubbling out of the ground or if you notice an unusual amount of water standing in an otherwise dry area, contact the Public Works Department at 708-246-3080. These are indications that there may be a water main break. We currently experience between six and nine water main breaks per year. The Public Works Infrastructure Asset Management Plan is now being created in the Village for the first time in order to identify water mains that need replacement. A capital plan is being prepared to accomplish needed infrastructure replacements on an orderly schedule.
The Village is responsible for the main water line which runs in front of your home, while the service line which runs from the main line to your water meter is the homeowner's responsibility. If you need to have the water to your home turned off and cannot turn it off at the meter, call us and we will send a Water Division employee to turn the water off at the house service line in the parkway.
Water pressure is always kept at an even level. If you have a problem with an individual faucet, it is probably due to a clogged sieve in the faucet itself. If you are experiencing water pressure problems throughout the house, call us. We will send a service technician to inspect your water meter and to help you identify the source of the problem.
