September 10, 2018, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM @ Pleasantdale Park District
Presented by Flagg Creek Heritage Society, “Three Illinois Women During the Civil War” tells the story of three different heroic women. The one-woman show features portrayals of Mother Bickerdyke, who established 300 field hospitals and assisted wounded soldiers on 19 battlefields; Albert Cashier, who was born a woman but passed as a man for most of her life after serving as a soldier during the Civil War; and Julia Dent Grant, the wife of the commanding officer of the Union Army. The performer, an Illinois Bicentennial Road Scholar, Betty Carlson Kay, taught in Springfield for 34 years and caught the history bug. About 10 books later, she is bringing history to life through her dramatic presentations of historical figures. During the Illinois Bicentennial, she is traveling across the state sponsored by the Illinois Humanities and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. This hour program including time for questions will begin at 7pm, is free and will include refreshments.
