Building and Zoning Department
The time to apply for a building permit is before you start a project. Keep in mind that building permits may take a few days to process and all contractors doing work in the Village need to be registered annually.
A building permit is required prior to the commencement of any construction, addition, alteration, demolition or interior/exterior remodeling affecting the structural integrity of any building structure. A building permit application form may be obtained below. Construction may not begin until a permit has been approved and issued by the Village of Indian Head Park.

In 2008, the Village Board approved Ordinance #08-4, amending the Indian Head Park Municipal Code regarding certain fees and charges which requires contractors performing work in the Village of Indian Head Park to register and pay the appropriate annual business license fee as listed on the form. The Contractor Business License may be obtained below.

A building permit is required for the following scopes of work: decks, additions, alterations to existing structures, hot tubs, in-ground swimming pools, remodeling, installation of RPZ sprinkler devices, demolitions, fireplace installations, changes in grade, electric or plumbing service upgrades, (including sewer clean out installation), garage floor replacement, and other miscellaneous improvements.
A building permit is not needed for the following projects: roof shingle replacement (withoutstructural alterations to the roof line), driveway resurfacing or replacement (if the grade or size of the driveway and property is not altered), certain interior decorating projects (carpet replacement, cabinet replacement, painting, replacement of flooring and various other interior routine home improvement projects), window and door replacement (as long as the project does not require any solid walls to be cut, it is not a door located between the house and garage, or located in a bedroom and/or basement), faucet or appliance replacement
An over the counter permit can be obtained for the following projects; Furnace, boiler, air conditioner, hot water replacement, tuck-pointing a chimney, and sewer repairs.

The Municipal Code is organized to make the laws of the Village as accessible as possible to officials, employees and citizens of the community. A codification project is currently underway with the vendor MuniCode with the purpose of converting all the Indian Head Park Municipal Code to a digitally available format. This project is expected to be completed by Fall 2016. Until this project is completed, you may review the Indian Head Park Municipal Code in person at the Municipal Facility at 201 Acacia Drive, Indian Head Park. Title 15 and Title 17 municipal code pertaining to Building and Zoning is available here online for your reference.

The Planning and Zoning Commission Members meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
